The X-Files: The Complete Third Season Collector’s Edition, originally released on DVD in 2004, explores new ground for the phenomenal series, broadens the boundaries of trust and betrayal and sports an incredible list of guest stars.

With the end of season two resting on a cliffhanger, Scully is forced to put her career and personal morals on the line for her missing partner, unconsciously drawing the tether that binds her and Mulder closer than ever before. Beginning the third season with an ambitious three-part episode arc considered part of the mythology, the agents lives remain in a constant state of grave danger that ultimately brings them to a point of unfailing determination and incredible dedication to both their work and each other.

The X-Files: From Cult to Phenomenon

By the third season, the show had finally found its stride. It had a resolute writing and directing team that found new and impressive ways to tell stories each week and a creator that knew exactly how to tap into the most frightening and disturbing thoughts of people all around the world. Also at work was the undeniable chemistry between the show’s stars, electric and evident from the very beginning, which was really starting to light up the Internet chat rooms, creating the first ever breed of “shippers” (people who want to see two characters from a certain television show consummate a romantic relationship).

From No Stars to All Stars

Consequently, because of its climb in attention and popularity, the show began showcasing extraordinary talent through its guest stars. Actor John Neville (The Well-Manicured Man) became an intricate part of the masked syndicate, or shadow government, with whom Mulder and Scully constantly found themselves at odds. Giovanni Ribisi played a human lightening rod, named Darin Peter Oswald, who could control the natural force with his mind in the episode “D.P.O.”. Jack Black, also in “D.P.O.,” played Darin’s friend, Zero. The late, great Peter Boyle guest starred as the title character in “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose,” a sarcastic psychic cursed with the gruesome ability to foresee how people will die; he won an Emmy for this guest appearance.

“Revelations,” the first episode to deal directly with Mulder and Scully at odds over religion, featured Kenneth Walsh as a religious psychopath hell-bent on destroying a stigmatic young boy. Bobbie Phillips portrayed a svelte entomologist in “War of the Coprophages” who grasps Mulder’s attention and brings out Scully’s jealous side. “Grotesque” has Kurtwood Smith playing Mulder’s old superior, challenging the passionately intelligent agent to test his own boundaries. Canadian crooner, Michael Bublé, makes a brief cameo as a submarine sailor at the beginning of a very important two part mythology arc “Piper Maru/Apocrypha,” B.D. Wong and Lucy Liu appear in “Hell Money,” a story of heart-wrenching self mutilation in the name of untold riches in L.A Chinatown and Charles Nelson Riley steals the show as the title character in the very humorous “Jose Chung’s “From Outer Space”.

Branching out from exclusive drama by adding a few comedy episodes really helped to develop the series in season three. Some of the most memorable comedy episodes were written by Darin Morgan, better known as the fluke-man from season two’s “The Host” and Eddie Van Blundht in season four’s “Small Potatoes”. This set includes another documentary, “The Truth about Season Three,” Carter’s interview on twelve episodes, seven special effects features with optional commentary by Mat Beck, six deleted scenes with optional commentary by Carter, seventeen “Behind-the-Truth” spots from the F/X channel, forty-six promotional television spots, and “Mere Words” a new DVD-ROM computer game.
