As another summer of reruns ends and the kids return to school, the mass television audiences prepare to reacquaint themselves with old favorites, and a few new ones too.

Here is the first of a multi-part detailed breakdown of what to expect this fall season, with some positive and negative comments regarding each show's potential fate:

Returning Sci-Fi Shows of Fall 2008

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: When last season ended, many questions were left unanswered, namely the fate of John Connor's teenage Terminator/bodyguard Cameron Phillips (Summer Glau), who was at the wheel of a jeep when it exploded. Look for further character development with time travelling freedom fighter Derek Reese (Brian Austin Green), who plays the brother of original Terminator movie character Kyle Reese (originally played by Michael Biehn in the Ah-Nuld version). Also, expect first season evil terminator Cromartie to make an recurring appearance as a continuing threat to young John Connor.

Lost yet? Tune in, as this show promises to continue well into a full second season, and has plenty to work with, within the overall Terminator franchise.

Fun Trivia Note: Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson will join the show, as a scheming business executive who has plans for the technology that eventually becomes Skynet.

Chuck: As the first season of this show ended, Chuck's identity as a walking asset to both the NSA and the CIA was compromised, and the NSA had no choice but to throw Chuck into an isolated cell, lest foreign interests get their hands on him, and the secrets his head contains.

(Note to newbies: Chuck is about a guy who inadvertantly had an entire database of government data uploaded to his brain, via subliminal images)

All that is known at this time, is that the first few episodes of season two, will deal with how he will escape this latest predicament, and how Chuck continues to deal with both his protectors, NSA Major John Casey (Adam Baldwin) and Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski), while trying to hide this secret life from his friends at the BuyMore store.

Supernatural: In the season finale last spring (following the post-WGA strike), the last few episodes focused on how demon hunter Sam Winchester (Jared Paladecki) and friendly demon Ruby (Katie Cassidy) were still looking for ways to save Sam's brother Dean (Jensen Ackles) from losing his soul in a deal he had made with a powerful demon, Lilith (portrayed by various actresses, given the whole body possession thing).

For those of you who missed out, well let's just say they came short, and brother Dean (well his soul, anyway) is currently residing in a very hot and unpleasant place in the underworld. Early season four will tackle with Dean's return (you can't really honestly nix a show's main protagonist, even if he goes to hell), as well as several attempts by villains of the week in bringing back the demon Azazel, seen in past seasons. There is some doubt as to how long this show can last, given so much interaction with a limited number of well connected hellish demons, however the run they have had thus far has proved interesting to say the least. All the luck to them!

Look for Part Two of this series, which will cover the return of Heroes, Smallville, as well as Pushing Daisies.
