With research into transplants, gene and stem cell therapy and cloning, our very definition of “humanity” changes almost daily. But there is a darker side to unfettered bio-research -- that every day the less ethical labs risk unleashing monsters on the world. Sanctuary asks how we would cope, were this to happen. And the next question – what if those monsters are the future of humanity?
Sanctuary’s makers claim it to be “the first broadcast quality, High Definition dramatic series designed specifically for the internet. It will feature unprecedented interactive features - including flash gaming and social networking.”
Damian Kindler said in an interview at Gateworld.net “It's a show set in an undefined, somewhat Gotham City world with a foot in historical Victorian-era London.”
Sanctuary boasts dazzling visual effects as it takes the viewer into a world where science borders the supernatural world. Sanctuary’s online fictional universe is intended to fill the void left by the collapse of traditional network television’s interest in speculative fiction, through multiple High Definition resolutions, immersive interaction, and the opportunity for the viewer to communicate directly with the Sanctuary creative team.
Sanctuary has an impressive pedigree. It features creature effects by Emmy Award winner Todd Masters of Six Feet Under and Star Trek - First Contact. From TV, the executive producers are Martin Wood, John Smith, and Damian Kindler (like Tapping) of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis; from the world of gaming comes executive Marc Aubanel, who was involved with FIFA Soccer, Need for Speed, and Marvel Nemesis, while from the internet comes online designer John Kalangis, and computer graphics designer Ron Martin.
These web broadcasts aim to be amongst the highest quality and most technically advanced content ever developed specifically for the Internet. All the scenes are shot on green screen so the background is completely computer generated.
As well as a pedigree production team and high-definition effects, Sanctuary features an an internationally recognizable cast.
Dr. Helen Magnus, a quasi-immortal battling terrifying and monstrous creatures is played by Amanda Tapping of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
Helen is supported by her reluctant protégé Will Zimmerman, played by Robin Dunne of Species 3, Dawson’s Creek and The Big Hit as well as her intrepid -- if somewhat reckless -- daughter Ashley, played by Emilie Ullerup of Battlestar Galactica.
Together they must venture into a frightening, mysterious world inhabited by semi-supernatural beings that defy easy classification.
Also featured from Stargate SG-1 and/or Atlantis, are Laura Mennell, David Hewlett, Paul McGillion, Peter Deluise and Ryan Robbins.
Episode summaries will follow at a later date.
