In the Doctor's 45 years of tardis time-travel he has encountered many foes, find out who they are in this guide to the deadliest monsters.

The Daleks and their Creator Davros

It was the original doctor William Hartnell who first met the Daleks on their metal home planet of Skaro. Little did he know then that they were to turn out to be his deadliest enemy. It is only after countless encounters that the Doctor, Tom Baker finds out in ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ all about their creation. Davros, part of the Kaled race of scientists created the Daleks as the perfect killing machine to protect his own race against the Thals. This was to turn against Davros in the future, when the Daleks decided that the survival of their own race was their priority, even over their creator.

Cybermen

These robotic men are ruthless and emotionless. They learned how to replace human tissue with Cybernetics, to become more physically powerful. The Cybermen’s main aim is to survive as a race. Originally their home planet Mondas was a twin to Earth, but the two planets collided and Mondas was destroyed. Therefore the Cybermen attempt to go back in time on several occasions to destroy Earth, so that Mondas will survive. The Cybermens’ weakness is gold and if put into their chest units, they suffocate.

Sontarans

This is a race of warriors, with a love of war. They are cloned and have a very squat appearance, due to the intense gravity on their home planet. They have been fighting the Rutans for years, for so long in fact that according to the Doctor they have forgotten what they are fighting about. The Sontarans are an intelligent race, but one that is not yet capable of time travel. In one meeting with the Doctor in ‘The Two Doctors’ they hope to isolate part of the Doctor’s brain that will give them the secret of time travel. Earth is a strategic place from which the Sontarans can fight the Rutans. To this end there is a planned invasion of Earth, but ahead of the fleet of Sontarans arriving, Field-Marshall Styre is sent down to Earth to conduct experiments on the human race. He does this to discover their weaknesses, but he is of course thwarted by the Doctor.

Silurians and Sea Devils

Jon Pertwee is the first doctor to meet both the Silurians and the Sea Devils. Both species are reptiles and cousins. Pending a meteor strike on Earth, during the Eocene Period, the Silurians and Sea Devils went into hibernation. As there was no strike, both races were eventually woken by human disturbance above their caves. Although essentially peace-loving creatures, they still saw the Earth as their own and resented the coming of man. Fighting ensues between humans and reptiles, once the Silurians and Sea Devils realise that they will not be able to live alongside each other in peace.

Ice Warriors

These chilling monsters originate from Mars. They have a human stature, with scaly skin and guns built into their hands. Mars is a dying planet and so the Ice Warriors want Earth for themselves. As is seen in ‘The Seeds of Death’ before they can inhabit Earth it needs to be cooled down. Set in the future the Earth’s weather is now controlled from a central station, over which the Ice Warriors try to take control ahead of their invasion fleet. The Doctor, Patrick Troughton manages to send the fleet on a course that will put them into orbit around the Sun. Ice Warriors can only exist in cool temperatures, so it won’t be long before they overheat.
